Sweden makes home cleaning unusually affordable through the RUT deduction: a tax reduction covering 50 % of the labour cost for household services performed in your home, applied directly on your invoice — you simply pay half the labour cost upfront, and the cleaning company claims the rest from the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket). To qualify you need to be liable for tax in Sweden, be at least 18 by the end of the year, and the work must be done in your own home. The yearly ceiling is generous — 75 000 kr in deduction per person — so a regular home cleaning rarely comes near it. How the RUT deduction actually works
RUT (from "rengöring, underhåll, tvätt" — cleaning, maintenance, laundry) is a tax reduction, not a rebate you apply for afterwards: the invoice model means the provider deducts up to 50 % of the labour cost on the spot and requests that amount from Skatteverket. Your part is meeting the conditions — living in Sweden and paying tax here, being 18 or older by year-end, and having the work done in your own home (rentals count; your employer's office does not). The deduction shows up later as a preliminary tax reduction in your tax return, so keep an eye on it there. Cap: 75 000 kr in total deductions per person per year — shared with the ROT deduction for renovation work if you use that too.
What cleaning services are covered
Everyday home cleaning, deep cleaning (storstädning), move-out cleaning (flyttstädning — the thorough clean Swedish rental contracts and apartment sales expect at handover) and window cleaning in your home are all RUT-eligible. Office cleaning is not, and neither is stairwell cleaning in your building — the deduction is strictly for work inside your own home or holiday home.
